Cryo Sculpting is vastly different, using the newest technologies available, and has become the #1 alternative to CoolSculpting across the country. CoolCRYO is one of the only studios in South Dakota offering this new form of fat freezing, and is quickly becoming recognized as the premier CoolSculpting alternative in the Rapid City greater area.
Before we talk about the differences, here is some background on fat freezing and cryolipolysis.
What is Cryolipolysis?
Cryolipolysis is a nonsurgical fat freezing & reduction treatment that utilizes very cold temperature to reduce fat pockets in specific areas of the body.
Although cryolipolysis is more-or-less a generic term for fat freezing, it is sometimes specifically associated to a technique of fat freezing that uses applicators and suction. CoolSculpting is the most popular-known brand that utilizes this type of fat freezing procedure.
If you ever got divots in your face from sucking popsicles as a kid (a phenomenon called Popsicle panniculitis), you’ve actually experienced a version of cryolipolysis. In Popsicle panniculitis, children get permanent divots in their face because the regular cold exposure damages nearby fat cells.
Cryolipolysis works more or less the same way, just more precisely. It’s a nonsurgical, targeted fat reduction procedure that uses cold to reduce stubborn fat deposits.
The treatment is not a weight loss procedure, but rather a supplemental procedure for people who have fat concentration in specific areas, due to their natural body fat distribution. The treatment reduces stubborn fat deposits that do not respond to diet and exercise.
See this article at the Cleveland Clinic for additional information.
How It Works and How It Destroys Stubborn Fat
In layman’s terms, cryolipolysis is a treatment that uses cold to freeze and destroy fat cells underneath the skin’s surface.
The procedure is usually performed in a clinic rather than a hospital. Sometimes, a skin-marking pencil is used to outline the size and shape of the fat deposit, and then the treatment is applied. You may feel numbness, stinging, tingling, or aching as the cooling down process commences. If you’ve ever had frostbite, this operates along similar lines.
The idea of the procedure is simple: to target and destroy fat cells which are far more susceptible to cold damage than skin cells. The cold treatment injures the fat cells, which triggers an immune response. In the process, the fat cells are killed, and macrophages (a type of white blood cell) are dispersed in the injury location to dispose of debris and dead material, thus ridding the body of dead fat cells.
Why Try Cryolipolysis?
You know those fat deposits that just won’t go away, no matter what kind of diet or exercise you try?
Unfortunately, targeted fat loss isn’t possible with diet and exercise. Our body distributes fat based on our natural body composition. In other words, you’re not targeting fat in one area. You have to bring down your cumulative body fat percentage in order to see decreases in a specific area. The bad news is that you don’t know where your body will get rid of fat deposits first, nor can you redirect its first-choice fat deposit.
Cryolipolysis changes the whole story. It’s a form of targeted fat loss that can’t be achieved anywhere else. Plus, it relies on a natural body response to function. You may not be able to control how your body burns fat, but if cells are damaged and die, macrophages are always dispensed to remove the dead tissue to keep the surrounding tissue healthy.
Like we said, there’s no magic. Just science.
After only two sessions I have seen results and so excited to try other treatments!

Cryo Sculpting vs. CoolSculpting
So, why choose Cryo Sculpting over CoolSculpting? First, it helps to understand how they’re different.
A CoolSculpting procedure relies on an applicator to freeze a layer of fat cells underneath the skin. A technician applies a gel pad to protect the skin and then uses a handheld treatment device called an applicator. The applicator uses suction to target the deposit, then gradually cools the target area to the desired temperature.
CoolCRYO’s Cryo Sculpting is a different type of fat freezing / cryolipolysis treatment that has fast become the #1 CoolSculpting alternative. We use specialized equipment that transforms liquid CO2 into a hyper-cooled gaseous form and sprayed onto the desired treatment area at high velocity. Our equipment achieves deeper penetration and faster cooling. That way, it can overcome resistance from hardened fat cells that may otherwise resist cool treatments.
Cryo Sculpting doesn’t need an applicator, gels, or suction. Instead, it relies on hyper-cooled gas sprayed on the treatment area at a high velocity.
I have had 4 sessions with CoolCRYO and I have definitely seen results. The process is relaxing and I enjoy the atmosphere and the amazing customer service that I get every time I walk in. I don’t plan on stopping my sessions.. it’s worth every penny. 😊

Why Choose an Alternative to CoolSculpting In Rapid City?
So, why choose an alternative to CoolSculpting?
For a start, Cryo Sculpting is actually more effective. Because the treatment uses a hyper-cooled, spray-on gas, it can actually reach more fat areas than CoolSculpting.
Cryo Sculpting is also lower-risk than CoolSculpting. In some rare cases (like that of model Linda Evangelista) CoolSculpting patients may develop a condition called paradoxical adipose hyperplasia, a.k.a. the stick of butter effect. This is when the treated area actually hardens and grows larger, creating the appearance of a stick of butter lodged under the skin. This does not happen with Cryo Sculpting, since the treatment does not require an applicator.
Oh, and did we mention that you can get a Cryo Sculpting treatment for less than 1/3 of the cost of CoolSculpting?
Differences Between CoolSculpting & Cryo Sculpting
CoolSculpting | Cryo Sculpting |
---|---|
Can cost a minimum of $1000 for one (1) session to treat an area such as your stomach | Cryo Sculpting is less than 1/3 of the cost |
Uses applicators & suction to freeze fat | Is performed by spraying hyper-cooled CO2 (a dry gas) on the area in a high intensity |
Applicators can be positioned in specific areas only | Nearly any body part can be targeted |
Treatments limited to those that are not notably overweight | Treatments can be performed on most anyone |
Can result in some delayed onset pain | No pain post treatment |
In a very small number of cases, treated area can harden into a butter stick-shaped lump (paradoxical adipose hyperplasia, or PAH) | No reported cases of PAH known |
Treatments can feel uncomfortable to some due to the combination of suction and cold | Clients may experience being cold, but will not experience any discomfort |
Treatments can range from 30-60 minutes per area | A single session (area) is roughly 15-20 minutes on average |
Results can be seen approximately 4 weeks to 4 months after treatment | Results can normally be seen within 7-21 days. Some may see results after the first treatment |
